Abdominal Stretch Marks

CLINICAL DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL

Abdominal stretch marks are skin lesions that appear as fine, elongated lines on the skin, typically due to the rupture of collagen and elastin fibres in the dermis.

These marks initially appear red or purple (striae rubra) and gradually turn white (striae alba) over time. Stretch marks are common in situations where there is rapid stretching of the skin, such as during pregnancy, obesity, or accelerated growth.

Although they are harmless, stretch marks can cause aesthetic concerns and impact the patient’s self-esteem.
