CLINICAL DIAGNOSTIC MANUAL
A diastolic murmur is an abnormal heart sound heard during the diastolic phase, when the heart relaxes and fills with blood. This type of murmur typically indicates an issue with the heart valves, particularly the mitral or aortic valve. Diastolic murmurs are less common than systolic murmurs, and their detection requires careful and thorough evaluation by a physician.
Pathology | Suspected Diagnosis | Confirmatory Diagnosis |
Mitral stenosis | Dyspnoea, fatigue, orthopnoea, haemoptysis, diastolic murmur. | Echocardiogram, ECG, chest X-ray. |
Mitral stenosis with flexible valve | Dyspnoea, fatigue, orthopnoea, diastolic murmur with dynamic characteristics. | Echocardiogram, ECG, chest X-ray. |
Aortic insufficiency | Dyspnoea, fatigue, palpitations, bounding pulse, diastolic murmur. | Echocardiogram, ECG, chest X-ray. |
